Bunuelos
(Fried Sugar tortillas)

3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup margarine
2 beaten eggs
3 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
Vegetable oil for frying
Anise Syrup

In saucepan heat milk and margarine to boiling; cool. Stir in beaten eggs. Stir together flour, baking powder, and salt; add egg mixture and mix well. Knead dough on lightly floured surface 2 to 3 minutes till smooth. Shape into 20 balls. Let rest 5 minutes. Roll each ball into a 4 inch circle. Fry in deep hot vegetable oil (375 degrees) about 4 minutes or till brown, turning once. Drain on paper toweling. Drizzle with Anise Syrup. Makes 20.

Anise Syrup: In saucepan bring 1 cup packed brown sugar, 1 cup water, and 1 tbsp. aniseed to a full boil. Reduce heat; boil gently, uncovered, 10 to 15 minutes or till syrup is thick. Strain. Makes 3/4 cup.
