STAINED GLASS COOKIES

1 CUP MARGARINE, SOFTENED
1 ½ CUP POWDERED SUGAR
1 EGG
1 TSP. VANILLA
½ TSP. ALMOND EXTRACT
2 ½ CUPS FLOUR
1 TSP. BAKING SODA
1 TSP. CREAM OF TARTAR
FOOD COLORING


MIX THOROUGHLY MARGARINE, SUGAR, EGG, AND FLAVORINGS. BLEND IN FLOUR BAKING SODA, AND CREAM OF TARTAR. DIVIDE DOUGH IN HALF; SEPARATE ONE HALF INTO 4 SECTIONS AND COLOR WITH FOOD COLORING, MAKING 4 DIFFERENT COLORS. COVER DOUGH; CHILL 2-3 HOURS.

HEAT OVEN TO 375 DEGREES. ROLL PLAIN HALF OF DOUGH TO 1/8 INCH THICKNESS ON LIGHTLY FLOURED CLOTH COVERED BOARD. CUT WITH COOKIE CUTTERS. PLACE ON LIGHTLY GREASED BAKING SHEET. ROLL COLORED DOUGH TO 1/8 INCH THICK; CUT OUT DIFFERENT SHAPES TO FIT ON TOP OF EACH PLAIN COOKIE SHAPE TO LOOK LIKE STAINED GLASS.

IF YOU WISH TO HANG COOKIES ON CHRISTMAS TREE, INSERT A SMALL PIECE OF PAPER DRINKING STRAW THROUGH TOP OF EACH COOKIE BEFORE BAKING (DO NOT USE PLASTIC). BAKE 7-8 MINUTES OR UNTIL GOLDEN BROWN ON EDGES.
